Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Technical

ISTC is seeking to fill one or more Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Technical (Technical Assistance Specialist) positions to collaborate with businesses, manufacturing and industrial entities, as well as municipal agencies, colleges and universities throughout Illinois to provide technical assistance in identifying opportunities and implementing solutions to improve efficiency associated with materials, processes, water and wastewater, and energy utilization.  The positions may be located in Champaign or Oak Brook, Illinois.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Client Engagement and Technical Assistance 

  • Identify and secure clients within Illinois’ business, government and not-for profit arenas. These clients could include ISTC’s current network of clients, consultants, vendors, local/state and federal agencies and private environmental and sustainability organizations.
  • Conduct on-site pollution prevention assessments independently and in conjunction with representatives from ISTC and partner agencies. Identify material and process optimization; water conservation; energy efficiency and waste minimization opportunities within client facilities.

Research – Data Analysis 

  • Analyze data from pollution prevention assessments and identify opportunities for environmental savings.
  • Target the triple bottom-line (People, Planet and Profit) by promoting identified opportunities and sustainable practices for businesses, municipalities, and state and federal agencies using research and assessment data.
  • Develop business cases for implementation of sustainable practices using data collection.
  • Collect, compile and report environmental outcomes and project outputs.
  • Contribute to project reports for funding sponsors.

Research – Technology Implementation 

  • Assist clients with facilitation and implementation of ISTC-recommended opportunities using research and assessment data.
  • Participate in pilot-scale projects for innovative processes in the area of industrial and municipal solid waste reuse, reduction, recycling, renewable energy and waste to energy methods.
  • Collect, process, and analyze data from these activities for the purposes of identifying suitable technologies for introduction to U of I organizations and Illinois companies.
  • Collaborate with U of I and industry to transfer the technology and knowledge to other clients and the research industry.
  • Present technical reports/papers/data to clients at professional events/conferences regarding ISTC services and/or research results.
  • Prepare and disseminate technical reports and publications to be published in professional journals, newsletters, peer-reviewed journals, etc.

Other 

  • Assist with research, data gathering and analysis, content development, and publications related to ISTC’s Technical Assistance Program.
  • Keep abreast of development in this discipline.
  • Work jointly with a number of varied constituencies while observing standards of professional conduct.
  • Must be willing and able to travel intermittently.
  • Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of PRI.

 Assistant Scientist, Research Engineer (up to two positions)

ISTC is seeking up to two Assistant Scientist, Research Engineer positions to facilitate applied research into new processes and methods for the design and scale-up of novel sustainable technologies, including wastewater and process water. This includes process design, process validation, project management, report writing, publications, and presentations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Research

  • Research the design and scale-up of new sustainable process for power generation, water treatment, and water management. Special emphasis on wastewater and water treatment systems. Focus will be on the development of pilot systems that can be deployed in the field at a variety of host sites including power plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and industrial facilities.
  • Research and identify regulatory and permit guidelines, timelines, and costs in order to enable novel systems to be tested in a field environment.  This includes addressing factors that include, but are not limited to, water, air, and construction permit requirements.
  • Follow all safety instructions and guidelines in accordance with PRI and University policies and maintain work spaces.

Research-Field work/Data Collections

  • Travel throughout the state of Illinois visiting industrial sites; power plants, wastewater treatment facilities, etc.
  • Travel to field and test sites may include overnight; outside of normal business hours.

Research-Publications

  • Prepare technical reports, progress reports, and final reports in accordance with sponsor guidelines.

Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and lead undergraduate students, graduate students, and hourly employees to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both individual and organizational levels. This includes task assignment, scheduling, on-going performance management with coaching and feedback, and travel approval.

Engagement and Outreach

  • Present research results to sponsors and at technical conferences.

Other

  • Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
  • Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of PRI.
